Launching Our First Magnetic Island Gin: Wild Island Barrier Reef Dry Gin
We marked the release of our first spirit, Wild Island Barrier Reef Dry Gin, with an afternoon at Picnic Bay Hotel.
The event brought together the local community who have supported us from the beginning. For our team, it stands as a defining milestone and a moment to reflect on what has been built here on Magnetic Island.
This release brings together years of preparation. Our founders, Moira Buchanan and Jeremy Hudson, have combined their distinct heritages to create something grounded in place. It is now ready to be shared with local gin enthusiasts and those further afield.
The afternoon opened with a Welcome to Country from Wulgurukaba Elder Uncle Brian Johnson, recognising the Traditional Custodians of the land and their enduring connection to land, sea and community.
Crafted entirely with wild botanicals native to Magnetic Island, this Magnetic Island gin captures the character of the region with precision. Wild-foraged juniper forms the base, layered with kaffir lime and dried orange, while eucalyptus, paperbark and yellow kapok flower shape its distinct profile. The result is a balanced, mouth-filling Australian craft gin with clarity and length.
Guests were guided through the release by Marcel Thompson, the only Australasian member of the UK Gin Guild. His tasting explored the structure of the spirit, from its precision through to the length of its finish. Read more about Marcel Thompson’s appraisal here.
We were also pleased to welcome Minister for the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation Andrew Powell, alongside Philip Thompson, Adam Baillie and Cr Ann-Maree Greaney. Their presence reflects the growing role of the distillery within regional tourism and innovation.
This marks the beginning of what comes next. We look forward to sharing more as we take our place on the world stage.
