An Outstanding Appraisal of Wild Island Barrier Reef
Dry Gin
Wild Island Barrier Reef Dry Gin has been assessed as an outstanding spirit, recognised for its balance, complexity and length. The appraisal points to a gin with clarity of structure and a distinct sense of place, shaped by the botanicals of Magnetic Island.
The assessment was led by Marcel Thompson, a distiller whose career spans both global production and the evolution of craft spirits. With a background working on established brands such as Gordon’s and Tanqueray, and formal training in chemistry, his perspective is grounded in both technical understanding and practical experience. He was recently inducted into the UK Gin Guild, becoming the first Australasian to receive this recognition.
“This is a gin that reflects both craftsmanship and environment; a true expression of Magnetic Island in the glass.”
Using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting, Thompson’s evaluation focused on how the spirit performs across structure, flavour and finish.
On the nose, fresh citrus leads, with dried orange and kaffir lime sitting over a defined juniper core. Native botanicals, including eucalyptus, paperbark and kapok flower, introduce a lifted, resinous character, supported by subtle spice from cardamom and silkwood peppercorn.
The palate is dry and well-balanced. Citrus drives the entry before giving way to layered spice and herbaceous notes. The texture is rounded and mouth-filling, with clear definition across each element.
The finish is long and clean, carrying citrus oil, gentle spice and soft resinous notes. This length and clarity reinforce the precision of the distillation.
Thompson’s final classification for our Wild Island Barrier Reef Dry Gin is outstanding, the highest possible grade. He describes it as complex, balanced and expressive, with a profile that reflects both technical control and the character of its origin.
